Who is Erik Schlangen?

Investigating, understanding, explaining, improving, designing, testing, modelling and developing construction materials is what I do. I am professor in the chair of Experimental Micromechanics at Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands. This chair is located at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, department Materials, Mechanics, Management and Design (3MD). Within this department I am leading the Materials and Environment section where we have an enthusiastic group of professors (full, associate and assistant), Postdocs, PhD-students and technicians working on all aspects of construction materials.

The topics I work on with my group are self-healing materials, (micro-)mechanics of materials, discrete element modelling, development of smart construction materials and additive manufacturing and in particular 3D printing of concrete. For this research we have high tech testing facilities in our Microlab.

Teaching I do mainly in MSc and PhD courses on different topics related to construction materials.

I am one of the editors of Construction and Building Materials and editor for the journal Advances in Concrete Construction. I am on the editorial board of Cement and Concrete Composites and served as editor for several Special Issues for different journals. My publications can be found under output.

Talking about our research findings is what I love to do. Elsewhere on this website, under output, you can find examples of keynote presentations at conferences, debates, lectures, a TED-talk and TV-interviews. If I am not traveling to a conference and you want to meet me in Delft, the best option is to be at the local swimming pool (25m) where I do my laps (80) every morning at 7:00.
