SSCS2025 conference Rotterdam

This week we had a great conference in Rotterdam. The topic of the conference was Modelling Strategies for Sustainable Concrete Structures. On top of that we had contributions on Auxetic materials, which turned out to be a good mix. I organised this event together with Mladena Lukovic and iris Batterham. We had 50 participants and 42 presentations. These small conferences are actually the best. You have no stress of choosing the talk you want to attend. Everything was in the same room without parallel sessions. And there were a lot of questions and discussion. Highlights were also the Splash-tour we had and a technical excursion to the Maastunnel. Below some pictures.

Yitao Huang defends his PhD thesis

Last Wednesday (25 June 2025) Yitao defended his PhD thesis. Yitao was supervised by Mladena Lukovic, Max Hendriks and myself. We invited prof. Eugen Brühwiler from EPFL to be one of the opponents. He also gave two inspiring lectures on UHPFRC and we had some nice dinners together.

Dr Koichiro Hara from SHIMIZU Corporation in Japan visited us yesterday. Prof. Jan Rots (Applied Mechanics) had a discussion with him on modelling fracture mechanics of structural concrete and masonry and he showed him around in the structural labs. I had a discussion with him on material related topics and projects we have in common, like 3D concrete printing, CO2-store and fatigue of concrete.
